Abstract

1389125 Low temperature cables COMPAGNIE GENERALE D’ELECTRICITE 22 Aug 1972 [23 Aug 1971] 39048/72 Headings H1A and A4D An arrangement for thermally insulating a cryogenic line 2 which may contain electric power transmission lines, coaxial signal lines or channels for cryogenic fluids comprises a screen between the line 2 and a metal outer, fluid tight enclosure 28, the screen being constituted by two part cylindrical portions 12, 14 carrying conduits 20, 22, 24, 26 for cooling fluid, the cylindrical portions and conduits being of an alloy of relative thermal contraction less than 5. 10-4. The alloy may be iron/ nickel containing 30 to 45% nickel. Elements 36, 38 suspend the shield, 12, 14 within enclosure 28 and line 2 within the shield. The part cylindrical portions 12, 14 are relatively located by thermally insulating intermediate members 16 which are preferably externally covered by a felt strip 50 so that thermally insulating powder 42, e.g. alumina between the shield 12, 14 and enclosure 28 cannot pass to the inside of the shield. A conduit Fig. 4, (not shown) may pass from the outside of enclosure 28 to inside the shield so that the space between line 2 and enclosure 28 can be evacuated. Conduits 8, 10 are mounted on and are thermally insulated from the line 2, e.g. to recirculate liquid helium which has flowed through and around hollow conductors 4. All the elements of line 2 including conduits 8, 10, are made to be non- variable with temperature. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the annular members which support the shield in the enclosure and the line in the shield also form fluid tight seals in the annular spaces.
