Abstract
1389503 Crash bags GENERAL MOTORS CORP 23 Aug 1973 [25 Aug 1972] 39987/73 Addition to 1375815 Heading B7B A vehicle body 10 includes a windscreen and instrument panel structure 14 having upper and rear walls 16, 18. The upper wall 16 has a recess 20. A housing 42 of U-shaped cross-section includes a lower leg portion 44 and an upper leg portion 46 joined by a bight 48. An inflatable cushion 66 is received within a throat formed between the leg portions 44, 46. The cushion is of T-shaped cross-section and is connected to a transverse diffuser 68 provided with slots 70. A cover plate 80 has a return offset leg 82 having flange portions 84, 86, the portion 86 being welded to the upper leg portion 46. When the cushion 66 is inflated by an inflator (122), Fig. 6 (not shown), e.g. a gas generator under the control of a sensor (150) the plate 80 is swung forwardly and upwardly against the windscreen 12. The panel structure includes a panel cover 90 having a decorative layer 100 covering foam material 98, e.g. polyurethane or vinyl plastics.
