Abstract

1389615 Foam generators H E WRIGHT 14 April 1972 17318/72 Heading B1C [Also in Divisions B8 and F1] A foam producer and dispenser, Fig. 3, comprises a reservoir containing air space and a foamable liquid space, foam producing means 30 having a mixing chamber 42 and a non- porous hollow tubular element 38 extending between the chamber and the liquid space, one or more restricted air passages 58 placing the chamber in communication with the air space, and a discharge orifice 26, the reservoir having a wall 12 which is deformable to reduce the reservoir space and increase the air pressure to displace the liquid and air to the chamber, effect intermixing and discharge of the foam produced. To place the discharge orifice 26 in communication with the chamber 42 the cap 22 containing the orifice is partially unscrewed to disengage bevelled surfaces 54, 56. To increase the air pressure, the reservoir, which is made for example of polyethylene is compressed, the pressure causing the air to pass through the passages 58 and liquid to pass up past a non-return ball valve 60 into the mixing chamber 42; for optimum foaming, a porous homogenising element 64 is provided above the mixing chamber. Instead of providing air passages 58, the wall surrounding the mixing chamber may be porous. A distributor, Fig. 9 (not shown) may be attached to, or formed integrally with, the discharge orifice 26. In Fig. 8, the air pressure may be supplied by a compressible bag 118 instead of the deformable wall 12 to cause air to enter the mixing chamber 149 through passages 147 and to enter a secondary mixing chamber 134 through a passage 136, the passages 147 being disposed above the level of the liquid in the reservoir 12; a homogenising element 128 is also provided. In Fig. 10, the homogenising element 64′ serves as an air flow valve and is movable to an upper position during a dispensing operation and to a rest position on projections 67 to allow air to pass inwardly through the passage 26 into the reservoir. In embodiments illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) the liquid is stored in one or two bags disposed within the reservoir. In another embodiment, Fig. 12 (not shown), the foam producing means is normally urged upwardly into sealing engagement by a compression spring 184; when the compressive forces from the reservoir are released, the pressure differential acts downwardly to allow air to pass into the reservoir.
