Abstract
1389625 Safety helmet C E BROWN and W A STEPHENS 12 July 1973 [19 March 1973] 33198/73 Heading A3V A safety helmet comprises a section 12 covering the top of the wearer’s head and a second section 14 biased by a spring 54 to a lower position. In response to an accident causing whip-lash of the head, the lower edge 48 of section 14 will strike the spine below the third vertebra 76, pivoting the section 14. Injury to the wearer is thereby minimised. The section 14 slides on section 12 between stops 36, 38; and has a broad, padded lower flange 44. The padding of section 12 includes a series of grooves to which air can be admitted via openings 22 and a slide valve 24.
