Abstract
1392842 Packaging KAY LABORATORIES Inc 28 April 1972 19938/72 Heading B8C [Also in Division F4] A package comprises an outer container 31 enclosing a chemical 33 and a rupturable inner container 11 containing a blowable chemical 19 under pressure, the chemical 33 and the chemical 19 being such as to react, on intermixture, endo- or exothermically heat. The chemical 33 may be anhydrous calcium chloride exothermic, and for endothermic reactions, the chemical 33 is ammonium nitrate. The chemical 19 may be an aqueous solution of calcium chloride. The rupturable container 11 is formed from a longitudinally fold web 86 which is longitudinally sealed by a sealer 99 and transversely sealed by jaws 63, 65 carried on rotors 59, 61. The chemical 19 is fed from a reservoir 108 by a pump 110. The top seal of the inner container 11 is formed below the level of the chemical 19 in the tubed web 86, and the completed package falls on to a conveyer 121 and is carried into an outer container 31 formed from a web 129. The chemical 33 is fed on to the container 31 from a hopper 125 by a volumetric filling device 127. Jaws 141, 143, for transversely sealing the web 129 carry sponges 145 for compressing the chemical 33 in the container 31. The jaws 63, 65 are heated to a temperature sufficient to rupture the inner container 11, but are cooled by the chemical 19 during sealing. To prevent excessive cooling of the jaws, the chemical 19 is heated, e.g. by the addition of calcium chloride. The jaws 63, 65 are pivoted to the rotors and are biased by springs 73, 75 to an inclined position. During sealing, the jaws pivot against the springs and to prevent a complete package being struck by the jaws as they snap back to the inclined position, a pair of brackets 77, 79 are secured to the jaws. Legs 83 of these bracket abut to delay the pivoting to allow the completed package to drop.
