Abstract
1395494 Electrical vaporizers BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd [trading as EDWARDS HIGH VACUUM INTERNATIONAL] 28 June 1972 [28 June 1971] 30147/71 Heading H5H A vaporizer for use in a vacuum pump comprises a support tube 2 down which liquid to be vaporized passes, a porous tubular resistance heating element 22 surrounding the lower end of tube 2, one end of element 22 being secured to tube 2 by a conductive end cap 28 and a nut 30 and the other end of the element 22 co-operating with an electrically conductive end cap 16 attached to a tube 14 which is slidably mounted on the support tube 2 by a plastic lined sleeve 10, 12, a spring, e.g. Belleville washer 8, being interposed between a collar 4 fixed to the tube 2 and a collar 6 fixed to sleeve 10, 12 so that the end caps 28, 16 are compressed against the ends of the heating element despite thermal expansion. Flexible graphite gaskets 24, 26 are interposed between the ends of the element 22 and the end caps 16, 28. Porous ceramic fibre layers 32 of insulation are in intimate contact with the inside of the tubular element. Current supply leads are clamped to tubes 2 and 14. A thin walled poorly thermally conductive sleeve 18 is connected between end cap 16 and a support flange 20. A flange 46 secured to flange 20 carries a casing 38 for the heating element and a surrounding radiation shield 52. A nozzle 40 for vapour and a drip tube 44 for condensed vapour are provided in the base of casing 38. Liquid supplied to tube 2 passes into chamber 34 defined by the heating element 22 through holes 36 and is vapourized on passage through the heating element 22 before emerging from nozzle 40.
