Abstract

1395647 Retractive switches TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc 18 May 1972 [1 June 1971] 23375/72 Heading H1N A keyboard switching panel, suitable for miniature electronic calculators, for example, comprises an insulating plate 12 having conductive paths on its lower surface; a plurality of spaced apart sets of conductive support members 20 on its opposite surface in electrical connection with first preselected portions of said conductive paths; conductive contact members 22 associated respectively with each of said sets of support members 20 and in electrical connection with second preselected portions of said conductive paths; a plurality of selectively actuable conductive elements 24 each supported by and in continuous electrical contact with respective sets of support members 20, and in selective disengagement with the associated contact member 22, said elements 24 being resiliently deflectable into engagement with said contact members 22 to establish electrical connection between said first and second portions of said conductive paths. As shown, the members 20 aud 22 are staples of gold-plated nickel wire, or gold and nickel plating on stainless steel, or of copper beryllium. The elements 24 comprise snap-acting discs of gold-plated stainless steel, for example, and are located in apertures 46 in an insulating board 44, the apertures being shaped at 46a to accommodate the tops of staples 20, and at 46b to locate the elements 24. A thin flexible insulating sheet or film 48 overlies the assembly, and a top cover or casing 28 carries push-buttons 26 having protrusions 50 for actuation of respective elements 24. The board 44 is preferably sealed to board 12 around its edges, the film 48 is bonded to the top surface of board 44, and the edges 56 of casing 28 are sealed to edges 12a, 12b of board 12. A semiconductor device such as an integrated circuit 30 may be mounted on board 12. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 4 to 6, not shown) collared rivets (66) replace the staples 20 and somewhat shorter headed rivets (70) replace staples 22. The snap-acting discs are supported on the collars of, for example, four rivets (66) and the locating board 44 is dispensed with.
