Abstract

1395846 Shearing fabrics RIGGS & LOMBARD Inc 23 July 1973 35066/73 Heading DIS A seam detector 10 for a running fabric web 14, e.g. for use with a shearing machine 12, comprises a relatively fixed first member 44 engaging one side of the fabric 14, a relatively fixed sensor 52 spaced from the member 44 and engaging the other side of the fabric, a second member 40 opposite the member 44 and engaging the other side of the web, a third member 42 opposite the sensor 52 and engaging the one side of the fabric, and means 32 connecting the members 40, 42 for mutual movement towards and away from the member 44 and the sensor 52 according to the thickness of the fabric 14. As shown, a shearing machine 12 comprises a shearing revolver 20 having helical cutting elements 22 thereon and which is mounted parallel to a rest 16 and a coacting ledger knife 18. The revolver 20 and the knife 18 are mounted on a bracket 24 movable about a pivot 26 to allow passage of a thickened seam 28. The detector 10 comprises a bracket 32 pivotable about the axis of a shaft 34 and carrying rollers 40, 42. Idler rollers 44, 46 are mounted between fixed plates 30. A seam sensor 52 is mounted between the plates 30 by a cross-bar 50 and comprises a roller 54, Fig. 3, which is mounted on a yoke 56 and which, on passage of the seam 28, is moved back so that a stem 58 on the yoke 56 depresses a spring-loaded actuator 60 of a microswitch 62 so that a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder 64, operated by a solenoid actuated valve 68 connected to an adjustable time delay 72, pivots the bracket 24 to lift the revolver 20 and the knife 18 to allow the seam to pass. A number of sensors 52 may be mounted across the fabric to detect skewed, bowed or other irregular seams. A tension device 74, having an adjustable spring, acts on the bracket 32 to cause the rollers 40, 42 to engage the fabric. Any thicker fabric passing through the machine causes the roller 40 to bias the bracket 32 about the shaft 34 so that the roller 42 is moved a corresponding distance from the sensor 52.
