Abstract

1397841 Automatic exchange systems GTE INTERNATIONAL Inc 31 July 1973 [8 Sept 1972] 41947/72 Heading H4K A centralized device is arranged for answering calls, transmitting a pre-recorded message to each caller identifying services or extensions available, to detect a signal from the caller identifying a caller by its time of arrival and to transmit a code corresponding to that identity to a switch unit adapted to connect the caller to the identified service or connection. In one detailed embodiment the apparatus is associated with a PABX with in-dialling facilities. A closed loop tape having three parallel tracks runs continuously. In response to an incoming call, track 1 is connected to line when a start tone on that track is detected. It carries an acknowledgement signal, an explanation asking the caller to give a “yes” answer to one of the following questions, and the questions which ask whether the caller knows the extension he requires and whether he wishes to speak about particular types of business associated with different extensions. If the caller knows the extension he can be connected (if he has a multifrequency sender) to dial that extension or if not be connected to tracks two and three in succession which respectively ask whether the first and second digits of that extension are particular digits quoting these in succession. After each possible alternative on each track a pause is left in which he can give a “yes” reply and during every such pause the line is connected to a signal detector, a tone on the appropriate track being used for this purpose. A counter advanced in synchronism with track 1 produces via a diode recording matrix codes identifying the extension and a second counter advanced in synchronism with each of tracks 2 and 3 produces in succession codes corresponding to the digits of the extensions. As signals from the caller are detected the corresponding codes currently being produced are stored and transmitted to the exchange identifying the wanted extension or used to initiate impulsing into a stronger type PABX with in-dialling. Alternatively the equipment may be used in a public exchange to route callers to special service equipment in place of an operator. Other PABX arrangements with operators also involved are described.
