Abstract

1398155 Electrophoretic data storage; matrix displays MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 31 July 1972 [29 July 1971] 35741/72 Headings G4C and G5C [Also in Division C7] Data may be stored by applying a voltage across two electrodes in contact with an electrophoretic material thereby to deposit material on one of the electrodes, the presence of such deposited material being detected by applying a second voltage across the electrodes and detecting the effect of the deposited material. Data storage.-A simple cell is shown in Fig. 1 in which two spaced electrodes 10 and 13 are placed in contact with a powdered electrophoretic material 16 suspended in a liquid. In response to the application of a field across the electrodes, e.g by means of a battery 17, the material 16 is deposited on one or other of the electrodes depending on the polarity of the voltage which may be determined by switch 18. The presence of the material 16 on an electrode causes the cell to exhibit rectification properties which may be detected. When the voltage is removed the material remains undisturbed and a second voltage is applied across the electrodes, e.g. by battery 19, to detect the rectification effect, the second voltage being of a magnitude insufficient to disperse the deposited material. In a practical embodiment each electrode plate consists of a plurality of parallel strips orthogonal to the strips on the other electrode so that by selecting one electrode strip on each plate an elementary storage location is provided in accordance with conventional matrix addressing techniques Display.-It is stated that by including at least one transparent electrode and by utilizing differently coloured liquid and powder or by using several different coloured powders each responsive to different voltage polarities a visible display may be produced. In an example a mixture of olive oil, benzene, polyoxyethylene sorbitan trioleate and TiO 2 powder is used.
