Abstract
1398417 Carbon fibres CARBORUNDUM CO 25 Sept 1972 [4 Oct 1971] 44158/72 Addition to 1375634 Heading C1A In carbonizing cellulosic fibre materials, i.e. yarns, filaments or fabrics, the material is first treated with a solution of silicon tetrachloride or organo halo-silanes in an organic solvent which does not react with the silicon compound and then carbonizing the so-treated material by heating to a temperature of at least 1600‹ C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The preferred organohalosilanes are silicon tetrachloride substituted with from 1 to 3 alkyl groups containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms. The preferred cellulosic material is rayon when the treated rayon is subjected to an intermediate drying step to remove the solvent before subjecting to the carbonizing step. During the carbonizing the rate of heating the treated rayon does not exceed 200‹ C./hour until a temperature of 800‹ C. has been achieved. At this point the material may be cooled for later carbonization at 1600‹ C., or it may be directly raised to 1600‹ C. at a greater rate.
