Abstract
1402017 Seating tubeless tyre beads ROYAL INDUSTRIES Inc 14 July 1972 [2 Aug 1971] 33158/72 Heading B7C The beads of a tubeless tyre are seated on the rim of a vehicle wheel by securely locating the wheel in a position such that one side of the wheel faces upwardly and the other downwardly loosely disposing the tyre on the wheel rim, and then directing pressurized air into the tyre interior both through the inflation valve on the wheel rim and also upwardly through the gap between the lower tyre bead and the lower part of the rim via a plurality of air outlets exposed to the atmosphere and located at positions circumferentially spaced around the gap. The air may be directed upwardly towards the rotational axis of the wheel at an angle of 40 degrees thereto and may enter the gap over an arc which does not exceed 300 degrees in extent. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the wheel is secured on a horizontal platform 11 by means of jaws 12, 13, 14 attached to the outer ends of levers 15, 16, 17 connected at their inner ends to a plate which may be rotated around a vertical shaft 24 to move the jaws into engagement with the radially inner periphery of the lower part of the wheel rim, and air is directed into the gap from orifices 19, 21, 23 in members 18, 20, 22 mounted on the outer ends of the levers 15, 16, 17, an air source being connected through a foot-operated valve (27) (Fig. 2, not shown) both to the members 18, 20, 22 and to the tyre inflation valve. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 5, the wheel is secured to an inclined platform 31 by means of a pair of spaced jaws 33, 34 fixed to the platform and a jaw 35 movable towards and away from the jaws 33, 34, the jaw 35 having coupled for movement therewith a shaft 36 extending perpendicularly from the platform and a plate 37 carrying arcuate tubular members 38, 39 with orifices 47, 48 for directing air into the gap, a pneumatic control system being provided both to move the jaw 35 and to supply air to the orifices 47, 48 and the tyre inflation valve, which system is constructed such that air cannot be supplied to the orifices and the inflation valve until the jaw 35 has been moved to secure the wheel on the platform. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,315,780.
