Abstract

1402233 Automatic control of machine tools INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 13 April 1973 [8 May 1972] 17807/73 Heading G3N A machine tool control system is responsive to a data store holding adaptive control program modules which are selected to modify the generation of control signals by a data processor. As shown, a central processor 10 prepares an NC part program from information fed from a card reader 11 or prepared on disk files 16 which is transferred to a machine tool processing unit 20. The transfer is effected by a teleprocessing unit 13, 22 or physically by card, through punch 12 and reader 13; by tape through recorder 14 and reader 23; or by movement of disk files from 16 to 25. The machine tool 31 controlled by the processing unit 20 besides tool sensors and positioning servos incorporates a detector responding to X and Y tool force sensors to provide an interrupt to the unit 20 in dependance on digital limit information from the unit. In addition to the conventional numerical control arrangements, there are provided adaptive control modules representing algerithms whereby the operation of the tool is adaptively controlled in responce to signals from the sensor. The appropriate module for a combination of tool and material to be cut is called up from the machine program.
