1414174 Block copolymers STAMICARBON BV 12 Dec 1972 [15 Dec 1971] 57225/72 Heading C3P Elastomeric block copolymers of the general formula A-B-C, at least blocks A and B being linked by styrene units in which A is a non- elastomeric block derived from α-methylstyrene units and having a number average M.Wt. of 2000 to 100,000, B is an elastomeric block with a number average M.Wt. of 15,000 to 250,000, and C is a non-elastomeric block with a number average M.Wt. of 2000 to 100,000, and wherein A and C are identical if a linkage agent is used, are prepared by forming a polymer block from α-methyl-styrene at below 0‹ C. with the aid of a monofunctional anionic initiator, reacting the block so formed at below 0‹ C. with 1-100 molar proportion of styrene based on the initiator, forming an elastomeric block at above 0‹ C. and then forming the A-B-C copolymers by adding a linkage agent or by forming a further non-elastomeric block. In examples sec.-butyl lithium is used an initiator and 1,3-butadiene used to form the elastomer block. Amyl acetate, divinyl benzene and methylenediphenylene diisocyanate are used as linkage agents to give as product an α – methyl styrene – styrene – butadienestyrene-α-methyl styrene block copolymer.
