Abstract
1414437 Automatic control of position CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 30 Nov 1973 [1 Dec 1972] 55722/73 Heading G3R [Also in Division B3] The distance from a workpiece of a flame cutting torch is controlled in accordance with sensed variations in the effective resistance of the flame. As described, a series of cutting torches 12A, 12B are moved parallel to respective workpieces 13A, 13B in response to signals from a template scanner (21), Fig. 1 (not shown). The vertical positions of the torches are controlled by servomotors (23A, 23B) connected to respective control circuits (51A, 51B) and a master regulating circuit 53. Each cutting flame 14 is connected in series with a fixed resistor 61 across a regulated D.C. voltage supplied by circuit 53, and the junction point of the resistor 61 and the torch 12A is connected to a summing junction 68 along with a reference voltage from circuit 53 and an individual bias voltage from a potentiometer 73. The junction 68 is connected to one input of an operational amplifier 77 producing an output signal, limited by Zener diode 82, for energizing either one of two relay coils 87, 89 causing the torch to be driven down or up respectively. Any discontinuity in the workpiece causes a high output from amplifier 77 which breaks down Zener diode 91 turning on a warning light-emitting diode 98 and a transistor 94 which earths the amplifier output, thus preventing torch drive. Individual torches can be driven manually using a switch 103, and all torches can be driven simultaneously be operating a switch 99. In use, an initial high pre-heat stage using propane and low pressure oxygen supplies, Fig. 1 (not shown), is followed by a normal pre-heat stage with reduced propane and oxygen flow. For actual cutting, high pressure oxygen is also supplied to make the flame hotter. Different reference voltages for the pre-heat and cutting stages are provided by the master height regulating circuit 53, the action of turning on the high-pressure oxygen supply also switching contacts 69, 72 so that a potentiometer 67 provides the reference in place of potentiometer 66.
