Abstract

1414523 Artificial larynx LABARGE INC 23 Oct 1972 [1 Nov 1971] 48769/72 Heading A5R [Also in Divisions F2 and G5] An artificial larynx 1, Fig. 2, comprises an air bypass valve V including a valve body 3 having a port 17 open to the air, a first tube 25 for insertion in a traceostomy opening in a human neck, a second tube 34 for insertion in a cervical esophageal fistula, and a valve member 19 which provides communication between the port 17 and the tracheostomy opening during breathing at stomal levels and which moves to close the port 17 during increased breathing at phonation levels whereby the exhaled air is transmitted via the esophageal fistula to flow over the esophageal mucosa in the area of the cricopharyngeus and provide a sound source that may be articulated for speech said second tube 34 includes a check valve F for the prevention of reflux of secretions into the valve body 3. The check valve F is mounted between the tubes 30, 34 and comprises a flapper valve diaphragm 51 biassed, at stomal levels, to close the valve F which is formed in a two-piece valve body 37, 43 of clear plastics material. The valve comprises a centrally mounted diaphragm 51 of silicone rubber on a spider ring 47 which seats on an O-ring 45 and forms a seal when the two portions 37 and 43 are threaded together. In another embodiment a check valve (FA), Fig. 4 (not shown) is mounted on the distal end of the tube 30 and comprises a resilient flexible diaphragm (61) secured to the top edge of a bevelled end of a tube (59). The port 17, formed in a stem 9 of a movable member 7 having a knob 13, has a bevelled inner end which forms a valve seat 11 which, on rotation, adjusts the pressure to which the valve member 19 responds to close the port 17. A stop 23 prevents excessive movement of the member 19 during more violent expulsions of air from the lungs. In another embodiment. Fig. 5, a reed type breath-powered sound generator G in a valve VA produces a low frequency sound (about 120-180 cps) when air passes through it. The sound generator G comprises a casing 63, a reed 67, a sound chamber 71 and a frequency adjustment screw 73. The valve VA includes a pair of tubular extensions 75 and 77 for trapping fluids in the tubes 25 and 30 respectively and a pair of caps 79 and 81 which may be removed to clean the valve. The tracheostomy tube 25 is provided with a plate 35 with slots 36 by which the prosthesis may be secured to the collar of the user.
