Abstract

141,709. United Shoe Machinery Corporation, (Assignees of Pym, C. F., and Pym, A. F.). April 14, 1919, [Convention date]. Lasting.-In a machine of the type described in Specifications 12304/03 and 118,288, power-operated means which may be automatic are provided for severing a binder from a binder supply, terminally forming the binder to adapt it for attachment, and driving it into position. Improvements are also made in the wiping means. The binderforming means are carried on the. wiper head and comprise a pulley 222, Fig. 8, preferably driven by an elactric motor which, as the head returns to starting position, is automatically clutched to a worm 262 driving a pinion 264 carrying a crank and link 270 oscillating an arm 272 operating a slide 282 which grips and feeds binder wire to grooves in blocks 172 below wipers 56, which are. shown raised in Fig. 10. The free end of the binder is then bent at an acute angle, and the other end is cut and bent by slides 194, 204, Fig. 8, operated by rack and pinion gearing from a cam 312 driven from the pinion 264. The binder is held by pins 104, Fig. 10, on a spring plate mounted on the wipers. The blocks 172 now descend, the wire being pushed out of the grooves by fixed guides in the grooves, and; as the wipers reach the end of their inward movement over the upper, binder driving plates 66, are forced toward the shoe by links 108 resiliently carried by racks 118 driven by pinions 126 carried by the wiper head, these pinions also gearing with racks 130, the movement of which with the wiper head toward the shoe has been stopped by a collar engaging a fixed bracket 96. When the wipers have reached the end of their movement, the bars 118 are given a further movement to drive the bent ends of the binder into holding position by levers engaging the outer ends of the bars 118, the inner ends of the bars then engaging lugs 110 on the plates 66 direct instead of through the resiliently mounted links 108, The ends of the pins 104 are bevelled so that the binder and plates 66 can pass them. The plates 66 are guided by projections 68 thereon engaging slots in the plates above and. below. The binding wire is straightened before, reaching the slide 282 by passage through the member carrying the worm 262, this member having internal staggered rollers 350, Fig. 13, of decreasing size rotating about the wire as it is drawn through in consequence of the rotation of the worm. The wiper head is adjustable vertically on its supporting swinging arm ; is also adjustable for tilt about an axis 36. Fig. 3. a. worm rotated by a nut 50 gearing with a worm sector on a lug 44 supporting the wiper head : and can he slid to or from the shoe along guides 40.
