Abstract

1432709 Antistatic acrylic fibres TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 25 Sept 1973 [26 Sept 1972 8 March 1973] 44789/73 Headings C3P and C3G Acrylic fibres comprise a mixture of (a) a homopolymer or copolymer derived from at least 60 mol. per cent of acrylonitrile and 0-40 mol. per cent of at least one vinyl comonomer and as an anti-static additive (b) a polymer at least a major proportion of which is a polyetherpolyester block copolymer of which the polyether segments are of the general formula wherein m is #10, n is 0 or a positive integer and 25#m + n#1000. The fibres may be spun from a solution of polymers (a) and (b) in dimethyl sulphoxide, dimethyl formamide or dimethyl acetamide. Polymer (b) may include a minor proportion of graft polymerized vinyl monomer comprising acrylonitrile and optionally another monomer such as methyl acrylate or methacrylate, vinyl acetate or sodium allylsulphonate. In examples polymer (a) is acrylonitrile/methyl aerylate/sodium allylsulphonate copolymer and polymer (b) is selected from polybutylene terephthalate-polyethylene glycol, polybutylene isophthalate-polyethylene glycol and polybutylene sebacate-polyethylene glycol block copolymers, and graft copolymers of polymerized acrylonitrile on polyesterpolyethylene glycol or polyester-polyethylene glycol=polypropylene glycol block copolymers wherein the polyester component is formed from polyethylene terephthalate, isophthalate, decandicarboxylate, sebacate, azelate, adipate or mixtures thereof or from polybutylene adipate. The graft polymers (b) are prepared by polymerizing acrylonitrile on to the block copolymer in solution in dimethyl sulphoxide using ammonium persulphate as initiator and also, in some cases, dodecyl mercaptan as chain transfer agent.
