Abstract
1433202 Mixed organometallic compounds in diene polymerization SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 30 May 1973 [1 June 1972] 25640/73 Heading C3P Conjugated dienes are polymerized in a solvent for the resulting polymer and in the presence of a catalyst system comprising solventsoluble compounds which are (i) a hydrocarbyllithium, together with (ii) a trihydrocarbylboron compound containing at least one hydrocarbyl of the formula where each of R 1 to R 5 is hydrogen or alkyl or R 1 and R 3 , together with the C=C group, form a cycloalkenyl or aryl group, the final concentration of active lithium compound being greater than the final concentration of boron compound. The compounds (i) and (ii) may be complexed beforehand, optionally in the presence of a diene such as isoprene. Alternatively, the boron compound may be added after partial conversion of monomer using the lithium hydrocarbyl. The lining polymer products may be coupled. In examples, isoprene is polymerized in a C 5 – alkane-alkene mixture using (i) sec-butyl lithium and (ii) triallyl- or tribenzyl boron (and in comparative procedures triethyl boron or tetraallyltin). The products are in some cases coupled, using diethyl adipate or the polymerization product of a mixture of esters of methacrylic acid with C 14-15 primary alcohols. The products have high cis-1,4-contents.
