Abstract

1438573 Vehicle safety device G B HALLBERG 13 Sept 1973 [19 Sept 1972 2 Oct 1972] 43169/73 Heading B7B In a vehicle safety device an elongated gas sealed envelope mounted under the instrument panel is moved rearwardly by a first pressurized gas source against a vehicle occupant, a second pressurized gas source being adapted to inflate the envelope during its rearward movement. As shown in Fig. 1 the envelope comprises hoses 31 connected at one end to a T-piece 27 mounted on a slide 24, Fig. 3, and at their outer ends to a slide 44, Fig. 7, which travels in track sections 40, 41, mounted on the side wall 38 and the door 39 of the vehicle. Upon a vehicle collision a release apparatus (2), Fig. 2 (not shown), causes detonator means 18, 50, Figs. 4, 7, respectively to blast powder charges 17, 49 so that a piston 20, Fig. 4, is forced backwards in a central sleeve 6 and by means of the rod 21 the slide 44 and T-piece 27 are thrown backwards, the slide 24 travelling along a slot 29 in the upper part of sleeve 5. Simultaneously each of the piston-rods 45, Fig. 7, impacts the slide 44 which is thrown backwards along tracks 40, 41 so that each hose 31 is thrown backwards against the vehicle occupants. During this backward movement the hoses are untwisted about their longitudinal axes by means of a gear wheel 56, Fig. 8, rotatably mounted on the slide 44 and which engages a rack 57 mounted below the track 40. A plate (73), Fig. 2, extending from the instrument panel 12 guides the hoses past the lower edge of the steering wheel. When the hose 31 has passed the lower edge of the steering wheel, a pin 34, Fig. 3, is pushed upward by a cam portion 36 in sleeve 5 to detonate a powder charge 37 in T-piece 27, so that the blasting powder damages tubes 30, Fig. 5, containing freon gas which inflates the hoses. When the two slides 44 are in level with the shoulder of the occupant they are stopped by the tension in the hoses 31 and forward movement of the slides is prevented by a wedge shaped brake block 54, Fig. 7, which wedges firmly against the inside of track 41. The ends of two belts 62, 63 are attached to an ear 61, Fig. 5, on the T-piece 27, and the belts extend over a roller 64, journalled in a yoke 13, and through a ring 65 suspended on the slide 24. From the ring the belts are loosely suspended in bights on the hoses 31 and their rear ends are secured to a mounting 69, Fig. 1, on the inside of the door. An elastic element 68 on side wall 38 maintains the belts in a horizontal position. On backward travel of the slides 24 the belts 62, 63 freely slide through ring 65 and over roller 64 to be stretched over the hip portions of the vehicle occupants.
