Abstract

1438719 Flocculating sewage sludges CALGON CORP 28 Aug 1973 [1 Sept 1972] 40394/73 Heading C1C [Also in Division C3] Solids suspended in water (e.g. sewage sludges) may be flocculated by adding to the water 0À1 to 20 p.p.m. of a cationic water soluble copolymer of a cationic monomer and a watersoluble polyunsaturated monomer. The cationic monomer may have the general formula in which R 1 is H or CH 3 ; R 2 is H or C 1-4 alkyl; each of R 3 and R 4 is H, C 1-12 alkyl, benzyl, or hydroxyethyl, or R 3 and R 4 together with the nitrogen atom to which they are both attached, form a cyclic ring containing one or more hetero atoms; Z is the conjugate base of an acid with a dissociation constant greater than 10-3 ; X is -O- or imino; and A is an alkylene group; or the monomer may have the formula in which each of R 1 and R 2 is H or CH 3 ; R 3 is H, C 1-12 alkyl, or benzyl; R 4 is H, C 1-12 alkyl, benzyl or hydroxyethyl; and Z is as defined above. Examples of monomers of the above formulµ are dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, acryloxyethyl- and methacryloxy-ethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, vinylbenzyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, methyl(vinyl pyridinium) ammonium chloride, 3-methacryloxy- 2 – hydroxy – propyl)trimethylammonium chloride and 3-acrylamido-3-methylbutyltrimethylammonium chloride. Examples of watersoluble polyunsaturated monomers are tri- and tetra-allyl ammonium salts, methylene bisacrylamide, polyallyl sucrose, and diallyl sorbitol. The polymers prepared in the examples are used to flocculate activated sewage sludge.
