Abstract

1438929 Tightening seat belts SOC NATIONALE DES POUDRES ET EXPLOSIFS 12 Dec 1974 [20 Dec 1973] 53859/74 Heading A3V [Also in Division F2] A seat belt is tightened by a piston moved within a cylinder by release of high pressure gas triggered by an impact detector. At a predetermined stress a link between belt and piston fractures and activates a jamming mechanism preventing further advance of the piston. Forward movement of the wearer is damped as the gas is compressed by return of the piston. The belt is attached to the inner part 14 of a buckle, fixed to the inner member 15 of a rod 3. Outer part 17 of the buckle is fixed to an outer member 20. The head 61 of the inner member includes an easily fractured neck 62, and abuts the end of the outer member 20. The end of the rod 3 is attached to a piston, generally indicated by 7 movable within a cylinder 8 held in casing 5 by a frangible screw 10a. Ignitable pyrotechnic charges 11 are housed in damping chamber 23, which communicates via parts 50 with expansion chamber 23. When the charges are ignited piston 7 is driven to the right, tightening the belt, until neck 62 fractures. Further movement of the piston in that direction is then prevented. In the embodiment shown, head 61 is projected by spring 63 and forces rods 60 radially outwards. A ring 59 thereby jams balls 58 be tween conical surface 64 of the piston and the inner surface of the cylinder 8. In a modifications (Figures 7, 8 not shown) the ring is moved by pivoted levers (74), or pressure of the gas passing through the fractured head and passages (88, 92-94) in the piston. Continued forward movement of the wearer against the belt withdraws the piston to its initial position. Fracture of screw 10a releases the cylinder 8 so the damping is continued as gas is compressed in chamber 23. The chamber vents via valve 28 at a predetermined pressure. In a modification (Figure 7 not shown) cylinder 8 moves in an outer cylinder (8a) which is released to prolong damping when a retaining ring (66) fractures. Figure 8 (not shown) shows a residual damping chamber (77) replacing the valve.
