Abstract

1439391 Thermonuclear fusion apparatus BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY 16 Oct 1973 [25 Oct 1972] 48090/73 Heading G6P A plasma for production of energy by controlled thermonuclear fusion is generated and confined in a toroidal chamber such that the poloidal cross-section of the plasma has a non- convex part adjacent the inner periphery of the torus. The plasma is stated to have static structural stability. The plasma 14 (Fig. 3A) is confined by two sets 124, 125 of magnetic field lines. The non- convex arc 4, 6, 5 of the plasma lies adjacent the magnetic surface defined by set 124; a poloidal current component along this arc is oppositely directed to the poloidal component along the convex, outer arc 4, 7, 5. Points 4 and 5 on the plasma surface thus are poloidal stagnation points lying on a closed loop toroidal current path 15, 16. Other plasma shapes having the same basic principles are described. In a preferred arrangement (Fig. 2A) for confining the plasma, an electrically conductive torus 10 defines a chamber enclosing a magnetically permeable, dielectric (e.g. quartz) envelope 12 divided by partition 120 into a pair of chambers 121, 122. Within chamber 122 are arranged a toroidal conductor 123 (which may comprise a plurality of wires distributed around a common, toroidal axis L1, as shown in Fig. 2A, or a single wire centred on axis L1, as shown in Fig. 3A) and a further toroidal conductor 126 formed of a plurality of toroidal wires. Externally of envelope 12 is another toroidal conductor 13 comprising a plurality of wires. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 2B), the envelope 12a is of circular cross-section, without an internal partition, and the requisite conductors are all arranged externally, and circumferentially, of the envelope.
