Abstract

1439654 Photo-electric receivers COMPUTER TRANSMISSION CORP 14 June 1973 [19 June 1972] 28368/73 Heading G1A An input circuit for optically sensitive receivers comprises a series combination of a photodiode and a first resistor; means for applying a p.d. across the series combination; amplifier means having its input connected to the junction between the photodiode and the first resistor; and a second resistor coaxially surrounding the first resistor and coupled to the output of the amplifier means. A photodiode 10 in series with a first resistor 21, typically 10 megohms, is connected to a positive supply 30, via resistors 26, 25, the latter forming the drain load of an input FET 23. Coaxially surrounding the first resistor 21 is a second resistor 22, typically 500 ohms, connected in a bootstrap circuit via a capacitor 41 to the drain electrode of the FET 23 which is made to follow the potential variations of the source 31 by being coupled to the emitter of a transistor .32 driven by the source 31. The voltage gain from the first resistor 21 to the second resistor 22 is typically 0.98, whereby the effective amplifier input capacitance is substantially reduced and the bandwidth improved. The bandwidth may be further extended by a transistor 42 having a capacitive emitter impedance 44 and an inductive collector load 43. The coaxial resistors 21, 22 of substantially equal length L may be of deposited carbon or wirewound on ceramic bases to give uniform respective resistance per unit length. The ratio of length L to outer diameter D should be at least two, preferably four. The end caps 21a, 22a are mutually isolated, while the end caps 21b, 22b may be inter-connected for common earthing.
