Abstract

1439706 Flare stacks JOHN ZINK CO 13 Nov 1973 52744/73 Heading F4T Apparatus for the smokeless flaring of combustible gases comprises a flare stack 10, Fig. 2, having a tip 18, a plurality of steam injection nozzles 12 which supply steam from a manifold 24 in a direction inwardly and upwardly above the tip into the burning gases, each nozzle including an insert 30, Fig. 3A, which has formed therein an inlet section 34, a throat section 36 and an expansion section 38. Each nozzle may be formed by an insert 42, Fig. 3B, wherein X is 0À5 to 2 D and Y is 1À05 to 1À50 D and Z is 0À2 to 0À6 D. The nozzles are located so as to achieve optimum air entrainment into the combustible gas stream and to cause turbulence therein, e.g. the nozzle outlets may be 1 inch above the tip of the stack and a distance D, the nozzle throat diameter, outward from the periphery of the gas stream emerging vertically from the stack with the nozzle axes at 50 to 80 degrees to the horizontal, or these dimensions may respectively be 3 inches, 2D and 30 to 45 degrees, or 4 inches, 4 D and 20 to 30 degrees.
