Abstract
1439714 IC engines – torch ignition type NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 5 April 1974 [10 April 1973 (2)] 15222/74 Heading F1B The invention relates to torch ignition type I.C. engines which comprise main and auxiliary combustion chambers, a weak combustible mixture being supplied to the main combustion chamber and a rich combustible mixture being supplied to the auxiliary combustion chamber, the mixture in the latter chamber being ignited by a spark igniter the resulting flame passing into the main combustion chamber whereby the weak mixture therein is ignited. The engine shown in Fig. 2 comprises an inlet valve 17 which opens to admit mixture into the main combustion chamber 15; also an auxiliary combustion chamber 25 which opens into the main chamber 15 and has air and fuel inlets, also a spark igniter 26. The auxiliary combustion chamber is formed with a threaded stud portion by which it is detachably mounted on the engine. The auxiliary combustion chamber shown in Fig. 6 comprises an air inlet 27 and a fuel inlet 29 which are simultaneously controlled by a valve 54b, the valve stem 54a having a diaphragm 51 mounted thereon and being spring- loaded in the closed direction by means of a spring 57. A spark igniter 26 projects into the chamber 53. As the piston moves downwardly on the suction stroke the diaphragm deflects so causing the valve 54b to open and to admit fuel and air. The mixture is compressed during the compression stroke and the mixture fired at the appropriate time whereby flame projects from the auxiliary chamber to ignite the weak mixture which has been compressed in the main combustion chamber. The valve shown in Fig. 3 is solenoid-controlled, the valve 32a being held in the closed position closing off the air inlet 27 and the fuel inlet 29 by means of a spring 33. The valve is opened when the solenoid 34 is energized by closing of the electric circuit.
