Abstract
1439777 Glass fibre manufacture JOHNSMANVILLE CORP 11 Dec 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 57257/73 Heading C1M To produce glass filaments or fibres having average diameters of 7 microns or less by introducing molten glass into a rotor 34 with orificed peripheral wall 48 containing at least 40,000 orifices 60, the orifices 60 have diameters of 0À014 inches or less and the resultant filaments are broken into fibres of desired length by an external air stream from a series of spaced nozzles 72 extending downwardly from a manifold 68, the temperature of the stream being too low to attenuate the fibres. The closeness of the spacing of the nozzles 72, the pressure of the air, and the rate of filament production determine the fibre length. The peripheral wall is preferably heated internally by a heater 28 comprising an arcuate manifold 62 having radiant burners 64 each directed radially outwardly and downwardly on to the peripheral wall 48 of the rotor 34.
