Abstract

1439848 Releasable fastenings; clamps RAYCHEM CORP 19 June 1973 [21 June 1972] 29009/73 Headings E2A and E2B [Also in Divisions Gl Hl and H2] A connector or actuator which undergoes ‘snap action’ at a transition temperature or temperature range comprises two interacting spring members, at least one of which exhibits a large variation in force/deflection characteristics on passing through the transition temperature or range and at least one of which has a non-linear force/deflection curve having a maximum through which it passes during ‘snap action’. Preferably only one spring member exhibits a substantial variation in force/deflection characteristics, the other member exhibiting a substantially negligable change, and it is this former member which preferably also possesses the non linear force deflection curve. In one embodiment, Figure 1, electrical contact is established between a printed circuit board 23 and a base 22. A leaf spring 21 has the non-linear characteristics, the phantorn line position being assumed below the snap action temperature or range. In another embodiment, Figure 2, a leaf spring 33 is situated in grooves 34, 35 at the ends of a forked spring 30. In yet another embodiment, Figure 3, an object 46 is clamped between the free ends of two cantilever springs 40, 41 whose separation depends upon a leaf spring 43 mounted therebetween. At temperatures above the snapaction temperature, the leaf spring extends to force the free ends apart. The materials of the two spring members may, in each embodiment be reversed so as to cause(dis) connection or actuation in the response to a decrease in temperature. A spring member having non-linear characteristics may be a longitudinally loaded leaf spring, as shown, or a Belleville spring. The member having the large variation in characteristics with temperature may be a polymer or elastomer, or a so called “memory metal” e.g. alloys of titanium and nickel, cadmium-gold, copperaluminium-nickel, indium-thallium, uraniummolybdenum, and uranium-niobium. The actuator may be employed for opening and closing valves.
