Abstract
1439865 Fire fighting screen J H HUSSON and M SIMONEL 23 July 1973 [3 Aug 1972 28 Dec 1972] 35065/73 Heading A5A A device for isolating compartments of a building structure in the event of fire comprises a flexible liquid-porous screen which is normally maintained rolled up adjacent to the ceiling of the structure, fire-responsive means to release the screen for unrolling, and means to drench the entire surface of the unrolled screen with liquid. In the device of Figure 1 two similar screens 7, 7a are stored on drums 5, 5a located within housing 1 and, mounted offset from one another. Each screen comprises in the direction of its breath a sequence of breath sections 71 72, 73, 7a1, 7a2, 7a3 which overlap to give an isolating screen. The screens 7, 73 are brought together by guides 8, 8a. The means to provide liquid drenching may be the guides 8, 8a themselves or apertured supply pipes 12. Metal bars 13 are attached to each screen 7, 7a to pull it into the unrolled operative position on release in fire conditions. In the embodiment shown in Figure 17 the screen is formed by a plurality of successive overlapped sections 71′, 7′, 7’@, 7’a rolled into a single drum 5, and pulled down by weights 13, 13a until the bottom reaches the floor and forms a seal thereto. The :base of housing forms two reservoirs with a feed lip 45 and edge 46. Spray pipes 12, 12a impregnate the screen as it descends and top of the reservoirs. The screen material may be material or synthetic, fire resistant or burnable cloth and may contain water filled stiffening pads or porous ducts on its surface.
