Abstract
1441548 Combined head and backrest for a chair PELTON & CRANE CO 16 May 1974 [17 May 1973] 21881/74 Heading A4J A headrest 23 Fig. 2, is slidably contained in a recess formed between front 22b and rear 22a of a backrest, the headrest being arranged to bear on convolutely wound springs 35 in the backrest so as to unwind said springs as the headrest is retracted, and the springs rewinding to assist movement as the headrest is re-extended. The backrest is preferably provided with a guide rail 30 which engages a slot 23c in the headrest, the cover strip 23d preventing the headrest upholstery (not shown) from fouling said slot 23c. A clamp 40 Figs. 2 and 13, comprises a flange 45 engageable in slot 23c of the headrest, and lugs 43 engagable with recesses in the backrest 22. Eccentric rollers 47a are operated by lever 47 to either grip or release the headrest. The bearings 36, Fig. 2, for engaging the springs 35 are preferably of low friction plastics, and the unwound springs may serve as lateral bearing surfaces for the headrest. Switch boxes 25 may be used to control motorized adjustments of the chair.
