Abstract
1441591 Coating AGFA-GEVAERT 9 July 1973 [17 July 1972] 33295/72 Heading B2E Hydrophilic layers are adhered to dimensionally stable polyester film supports by applying to an unstretched or only monoaxially stretched polyester film an adhesive layer from an aqueous coating composition comprising a polymer, immediately applying thereto without drying of the adhesive layer an aqueous gelatin solution, drying the two layers and stretching them biaxially or in the case of an already monoaxially stretched film monoaxially together with the polyester film support, heatsetting and applying a hydrophilic coating. The polyester film may be a film of polyethylene terephthalate. Suitable polymers for the adhesive layer are copolymers containing 45-99.5% of vinylidene chloride and/or vinyl chloride, 0.5-10% ethylenically unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid or of N-vinyl pyrrolidone, and 0-54.5% of at least one copolymerisable monomer such as acrylamides, methacrylamides, esters of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid maleic acid, and N-alkyl maleimides. Other suitable polymers are copolymers of vinylidene chloride, and acrylic ester or acrylonitrile and itaconic acid, copolymers of vinylidene chloride, an alkyl acrylate, and an unsaturated organic acid, copolymers of a conjugated diolefin with one or more vinyl monomers, a polymer or copolymer of a halogenated vinyl ester or of a vinyl cyano ester and copolymers containing at least 35 mol percent of vinylidene chloride. Plasticizers may be added to the aqueous gelatin coating composition. Examples of suitable plasticizers are given. The hydrophilic layer may be a photographic light-sensitive emulsion. In a typical example an adhesive layer is applied from a composition comprising a vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride-n-butylacrylate-itaconic acid copolymer, ethyl acrylatemethacrylic acid copolymer to an amorphous polyethylene terephthalate film and immediately without drying the adhesive layer was coated with an aqueous gelatin. The coated film was then dried, stretched transversely and heat-set. The resulting coated film was provided with a gelatin silver halide emulsion layer as used in photographic X-ray material.
