Abstract
1442545 Injection moulding KOEHRING CO 16 April 1974 [25 July 1973] 16559/74 Heading B5A Articles of mottled appearance are made from differently coloured materials which are mixed and melted in an injector mechanism and injected into a mould cavity 22, the injector mechanism comprising a screw 34 disposed in a rearward portion of an injection cylinder 24 the forward portion of which contains a torpedoshaped spreader 84 which facilitates melting of the materials while minimizing mixing thereof so as to preserve the presence of distinct colour patterns. One or more of the rear flights of the screw may lie behind the inlet 80 to limit mixing. As shown, the screw 34 is axially reciprocated by means of piston-cylinder motors 42, 44. To prevent backward flow of material along the screw during injection the screw may be held against reverse rotation or given a forward rotation. This may be effected by means of a regulating valve 104 which diverts some of the hydraulic fluid being pumped to the cylinders 42, 44 to an hydraulic motor 46 for rotating the screw 34. The torpedo 84 is provided with cone-shaped ends (86, 92) and longitudinally extending fins (90, 96) and grooves (88, 94).
