Abstract
1442775 Hollow spindles; chucks HARDINGE BROS Inc 3 Oct 1973 [3 Aug 1973] 46216/73 Headings B3T and B3B [Also in Division F2] A device or actuating a rotary gripping collet comprises a cylinder 18 mounted to a rotary spindle sleeve 44, a collet drawing member 12 extending through the cylinder 18 and being axially movable therethrough, a piston 16 slidable in the cylinder and connected to the drawing member, said piston including a first valve means 106 for admitting fluid pressure into a first chamber on one side of the piston and a second valve means 108 for admitting fluid pressure into the second chamber 98 on the other side of the piston, said first valve means 106 including a piston 134 to vent said first chamber when fluid pressure is admitted to the second chamber and said second valve 108 including a piston 135 to vent said second chamber when fluid pressure is admitted to said first chamber, and a stationary sleeve connection 20 for alternately connecting a source of pressure fluid, e.g. air, to said first or second chambers through said first and second valve means 106, 108, the said valve means 106, 108 being biased by springs 114, 115 to a closed position to trap fluid in a respective chamber of the cylinder when the fluid pressure is reduced so that a workpiece is held by the collet even when the fluid pressure source fails. The draw member 12 is constructed of an inner sleeve 32 having a pair of spaced apart slots and an outer sleeve 30 in close fitting engagement with the inner sleeve to form with the said slots a pair of fluid passageways 68, 70 connecting the sleeve connection 20 to passages 130, 131 in the piston 16. The inner sleeve 32 is connected to a further sleeve 52 which is screw connected to the collet.
