1447642 Controlling oxygen steelmaking USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 10 July 1973 [1 Aug 1972 4 Dec 1972] 32889/73 Heading C7D [Also in Division F4] Apparatus for controlling the operation of a converter, arc furnace, open hearth furnace or mixer in which the bath is blown by a submerged tuyere providing a central jet of gas surrounded by a second annular jet includes means for selecting and coupling to the tuyere a first or second pair of fluids, the system including provision for maintaining the flow of one pair of fluids after the other pair has been selected until the flow of the latter pair has been established, whereby entry of the bath into the tuyere is prevented. This may be achieved by a time delay in the valve mechanism terminating the flow of the first pair, or means for monitoring the flow-rates of the two pairs. In a further embodiment the flow-rate or pressure of the selected pair is monitored, and in the event of it falling below a predetermined level a flow of the alternative pair is initiated. The embodiment particularly described and illustrated in Fig. 2 encompasses an extended system in which air or low pressure nitrogen sheathed with nitrogen is blown during charging, nitrogen is blown through both jets during tilting, and oxygen sheathed with fuel is blown during the refining stage, while the tilting mechanism of the converter is also linked into the control system. The refining vessel may also incorporate double concentric tuyeres in the side walls either submerged below bath level and/or above the latter to combust evolved CO.
