Abstract
1447764 Attaching parts to lamp pinch seals THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 Nov 1973 [9 Nov 1972] 51819/72 Heading C1M [Also in Division H1] Shaped sheet metal members 10, Fig. 2, are secured to the pinch seal 16 of an electric incandescent or discharge lamp by embedding parts thereof into the material of the pinch seal to appropriately locate the members 10 relative to the remainder of the lamp. Preferably the members 10 are in the form of plates having projections which are pressed into the pinch seal when the vitreous material thereof has been softened. The members 10 may be mounted in the movable jaws used for forming the pinch seal and embedded in the seal simultaneously as the pinch seal itself is formed. Lead-in wires 15 may be connected to respective members 10 which may be provided with integral lugs for supporting the lamp from the reflector of a sealed beam lamp, for example, and for providing the electrical connections thereto. As shown in the tungsten-halogen lamp of Fig. 7, the sheet metal members 44, 45 have jagged edged perforations 46 through which the softened pinch seal material is pressed to locate them, and the lamp is aligned with respect to associated optical apparatus by aperture 47 and notch 48 in the members. A metal base or cap (51), Fig. 8 (not shown), can be secured to a lamp without cement by welding it to intermediate metal members pressed into the pinch seal. According to the material of the lamp envelope (e.g. borosilicate or aluminosilicate hard glass, fused silica or soft glass) the metal members may be formed of nickel-chrome-iron alloys, stainless steels, copper bronzes, coppercoated alloys, iron-cobalt-nickel alloys, molybdenum or tungsten.
