Abstract

1457310 Tape cassette TOKYO SHIBAURA ELECTRIC CO Ltd 30 April 1974 [30 April 1973 18 Oct 1973] 18868/74 Heading B8M [Also in Division G5] A video tape cassette comprises a case 2, a reel 4 rotatably supported in the ease, a tape 1 wound around reel 4, a member 9 mounted on the case for withdrawal relative to the case so as to present the tape to a reading or recording means and tape guide means 10, 11 mounted on the withdrawable member, as shown in Figs. 1, 1a, the endless tape leaves the inside of the reel, passes over stationary guide posts 6, 7, 8, posts 10, 11 attached to member 9 and tensioning roll 12a and then winds around the outside of the roll. A spiral spring 13 urges tensioning arm 12 into the position shown in dashed lines, thereby taking up the slack in the tape whilst member 9 is retracted. As 9 is extended arm 12 is rotated clockwise to pay out a loop of tape. In the fully withdrawn position of member 9 arm 12 is held in the solid line position of Fig. 1a by leaf spring 14, Fig. 1. In an alternative embodiment, (Fig. 6, not shown) the slack is not taken up on retraction of the sliding member 9. It is confined by fences 47, 48 to one corner of the cassette. In the intervals between withdrawing member 9 from the cassette and feeding the tape through a read or record head tape 1 is clamped by a leaf spring (41) pressing the tape against a roller (42). Tape drive capstan.-A video tape player includes driven capstan 16, pinch rolls 17, 18, magnetic head 19, head base 20 and tape guide 22. The shafts of the pinch rolls pass through elongated holes 15b in base 15 so that they may occupy loading positions, Fig. 4, to enable the tape and posts 10, 11 to pass between the capstan and the pinch rolls, and playing positions (Fig. 2, not shown) in which they press the tape against the capstan. The tape guide 22 comprises a pair of segments 25 rotatably supported on shafts 23 and each carrying an argnate vertical guide plate 24. From the loading position of Fig. 4 the guides are rotated 180 degrees about shafts 23 to the play position (Fig. 2) in which the tape is pressed against the magnetic head by plates 24. The movement from load to play position may be manual or automatic. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 the guide posts 10, 11 have flanges to prevent the tape falling off the posts. In the embodiment of Fig. 5a (not shown) the posts are replaced by hooks 10a. The shaft of each hook is mounted on a pivotable arm (10b, Fig. 5b, not shown). As the guide plates 24, Fig. 4 are swung into the playing position a pin (24a) mounted on each guide plate 24 pushes the adjacent pivotable arm (10b) to disengage the tape from the hook.
