Abstract
1457489 Utilizing geothermal energy SPERRY RAND CORP 20 June 1975 [10 July 1974 (2) 15 July 1974 (2)] 26287/75 Heading F4U In apparatus for utilizing geothermal energy, hot well water is pumped into heat exchange contact with clean water fed from an inlet pipe 8 in a steam generator 4, and the superheated steam is then used to operate a turbine 5 which is connected by a shaft to drive a pump 7 at the well bottom for raising the hot liquid well water both through the steam generator section through an annular conduit 10 and to the earth’s surface for utilization in a closed loop boilerturbine arrangement. The clean water flows from the pipe 8 through a branch 14 to a pressure regulator 14 into a manifold 22 acting as the heat exchanger with the geothermal liquid in surrounding conduit 10 and the generated steam passes via a passage 18a to the turbine. After expansion the steam is redirected to flow upwardly through the turbine to the earth’s surface 11 through a central conduit 9a. A portion of the clean water passes from the pipe 8 via pipes 13, 17 to form lubricant within a bearing section 6 of the turbine shaft. A control arrangement is described in which the pressure of the clean water entering the steam generator determines the rate of mass flow through the turbine and thereby determines the pumped well water pressure.
