Abstract
1457502 Enamelling steel CURRAN OILS Ltd 23 Nov 1973 [24 Nov 1972] 54504/72 Heading C1M A metal object of decarburized or low-carbon sheet steel 10 (e.g. a saucepan) is decorated by applying a first enamel coating 16 (over enamel ground coat 15, if applied), heating to the softening point of the first enamel, and allowing the enamel to harden, and then applying in a pattern a second enamel coating 17 of different softening point, and heating to at least the softening point of the second enamel for sufficient time to cause reaction between the enamels and physical movement of the enamel relative to the steel 10, so that a raised or relief effect 18 is achieved. The thickness of the second enamel coating 17 is preferably at least 0À005″, and the second heating time is preferably at least 15 minutes. The underlying surface may be exposed during the second heating in regions 20. The optional ground coat enamel composition applied may comprise 100 parts by weight of a mixture of three enamel frits (of overall final composition, in weight percent, SiO 2 47À3; Al 2 O 3 3À9; B 2 O 3 20À8; Na 2 O 16À7; K 2 O 0À7; CaF 2 7À5; NiO 0À6; CoO 0À6; MnO 2 1À7), 7 parts clay, 0À1 parts sodium nitrite and 40 parts water, the composition being dried and fired at 840C. The first enamel frit 16 may consist of, in weight percent, SiO 2 49À2; B 2 O 3 14À6; Al 2 O 3 4À8; Na 2 O 12À1; K 2 O 7À3; TiO 2 10À0 and F 2 2À0. 100 parts by weight of the frit may be mixed with 5 parts white clay, 0À25 parts bentonite, 0À1 parts sodium nitrite, 5 parts brown oxide pigment and 40 parts water, and applied to the object, dried, and fired at 800C. The second enamel frit may consist of (weight percent) PbO 35; SiO 2 45; Al 2 O 3 5; B 2 O 3 10 and Na 2 O 5. 100 parts by weight of this frit are mixed with 40 parts pine oil and 10 parts ochre oxide pigment, applied to the object by silk screening or stencilling, dried and fired at 800C.
