Abstract
1457528 Removing heavy metals from waste water NIPPON ELECTRIC CO Ltd 18 Dec 1973 [19 Dec 1972 20 Dec 1972 10 April 1973] 58620/73 Headings C1A and C1C A method of extracting heavy metals from waste water containing ferrous ions in an amount of at least twice the molar amount of all heavy metals other than iron, comprises the steps of adding alkali to the waste water in an amount of 0À9-1À2 equivalents of acid radical contained in the waste water to form a suspension of hydroxides of ferrous ions and/or the other heavy metals, bubbling an oxidizing gas into the suspension to stir up and at the same time to oxidize the suspension, whereby crystals containing ferric ions and further containing and/or adsorbing the heavy metal ions originally contained in the waste water are precipitated and separating the precipitated crystals to obtain clear water from which heavy metals have been extracted. An initial addition of ferrous ions may be made to waste water which contains no or insufficient ferrous ions. Alkaline waste water is treated without the step of alkali addition. The precipitated crystals may include ferromagnetic crystals which may be separated with a magnet. Heavy metals having a smaller ionization potential than iron may be removed by plating metallic iron added to the waste water. The heavy metals exemplified include Cr, Cd Pb Cu, Ni, Bi and Hg.
