Abstract

1459937 Corrugating INDUSTRIE PIRELLI SpA 17 May 1974 [23 May 1973] 22116/74 Heading B3E Apparatus for forming annular corrugations on a tubular screen of an electric cable comprises a set of rollers defining an aperture, Fig. 5, for lengthwise passage of the cable, the rollers having their axes in the plane of the aperture and being arranged to rotate synchronously, and at least one set of ridges, the set including a ridge on the surface of each roller. Fig. 2 shows two adjacent rollers R1, R6 of a set of six rotated synchronously by engaging teeth I 1 11, I 6 1. The ridges of a set comprise three ridges such as A 1 in one plane, and three ridges such as A 6 in a parallel offset plane, the ridges running from a flank of one tooth such as D 1 1, D 6 11 to a flank of an opposed tooth, such that the resulting annular groove in the cable screen is a single groove composed of relatively offset portions. Each roller, Fig. 4, is mounted in a fork 14 pivoted at 36 to a common annular member 18 slidable on sleeve 19 surrounding the cable, a lever arm 16 on fork 14 engaging a flange 20 on sleeve 19. A compression spring 24 is held between member 18 and nut 25, so that an adjustable spring load is applied tending to move the roller radially inwards. The degree of load may be shown by co-operating indicia on coaxial sleeves 22, 27. In a modification, Fig. 5, the rollers are mounted on an annular member 28 having radial projections 29 engageable behind inward radial projections 32 of a sleeve 30 on annular member 18, whereby a set of rollers can readily be removed and replaced. Spring bias may be applied individually to the radially outer ends of levers 16, the toes 45 of which, Fig. 4, may engage projections 46 on flange 20.
