Abstract

1462198 Detecting largest smallest signals WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 28 Dec 1973 [3 Jan 1973] 59941/73 Heading G1U [Also in Divisions G4 and H3] In an analog level detector having n inputs connected to non-inverting inputs of n amplifiers 58, 60-68 and n diodes D80, D82-D92 connected to pass the outputs of the amplifiers to perform an OR function at an analog output and to form a feedback loop between the inverting inputs and outputs of the amplifiers for feeding a reference bias voltage to the inputs so that the input signal having the extreme value is passed to the analog output, an encoder 94, 96, 98 is commonly connected to the amplifiers and is responsive to the input having the extreme analog value to provide a digital coded output having x bits where x is defined by 2x = n. As shown in Fig. 2A assuming the input 2 has the highest analog value the output of an operational amplifier 60 forward biases a transistor 70 and a diode 82 and makes the signal fed back to the inverting input of the amplifier 60 equal to the voltage at input 2. Since the same voltage is fed back to the inverting inputs of the other operational amplifiers 58, 62, 64, 66 and 68 and since all other inputs are less than input 2 all the other amplifiers 58, 62, 64, 66 and 68 will be saturated negative. As the transistor 70 is conducting a transistor 94 also conducts to make the binary output ABC equal to 001. The operation of the circuit when the other inputs are greatest is given by the table Fig. 2B. The detector may respond to detect the lowest input signal by using transistors of opposite conductivity type to those shown Fig. 3A, (not shown). The output signals from the operational amplifiers 58-68 fed back to their inverting inputs may be adjusted to equal their input voltages by a “trim pot” within the amplifier circuit. Diodes 82-90 prevent breakdown of the emitter-base junction of their associated transistor. Additional transistor circuitry Fig. 4, (not shown) including zener diodes (114, 116) connected to the analog output of the detector can be used so as to enable the level detector to accommodate high common mode input signals of the order of voltages (ŒVHV) supplied to transistors (118, 120) of this additional circuitry. A known level detecting transistor circuit which may be in integrated circuit form is disclosed Fig. 1A, (not shown).
