Abstract
1462441 Acrylic copolymer/polyhydroxy compound compositions CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED 29 July 1974 [31 July 1973] 33316/74 Heading C3P A polymer composition, soluble in water and in aqueous solutions of organic solvents, consists of a copolymer obtained by the free radical polymerization of a monomer mixture consisting of 90 to 10 wt. per cent of hydrophilic monomers selected from glycol mono(meth)acrylates, (meth)acrylamide either of which may be substituted as the N-mono or N,N-di derivatives with C 1-6 alkyl (optionally substituted with one or more hydroxy and/or amide groups), 10 to 90 wt. per cent of an α,#-unsaturated carboxylic acid of up to 6 carbon atoms, or the anhydrides, or the alkali metal or ammonium salts, thereof and up to 30 wt. per cent of comonomer or comonomer mixtures polymerizable therewith, said comonomer(s) decreasing the water-solubility of the copolymer, wherein the free carboxylic acid groups have been converted into the alkali metal or ammonium salts, in admixture with 5 to 50 wt. per cent (based on the copolymer in anhydride or the acidic form) of polyhydroxy compound(s). Preferred polyhydroxy compounds are glycerol, poly(ethyleneglycol), polyvinylalcohol, saccharose, glucose, starch and mannitol. The examples describe neutralized polymers of (1) 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (2 – HEMA) / methacrylic acid (MA); (2) 2 – hydroxypropylacrylate / acrylic acid (AA); (3) triethyleneglycol monomethacrylate / itaconic acid; (4) 2 – HEMA / MA; (5) acrylamide (Am)/AA; (6) N-ethylmethacrylamide, N,N – dimethylmethacrylamide and N – (2 – hydroxyethyl)acrylamide / AA; (7) Am / AA / N – propylmethacrylamide; (8) 2- HEMA / MA / 2 – ethoxyethylmethacrylate; (9) n – butylmethacrylate / 2 – HEMA / AA; (10) glycidylmethacrylate / 2 – HEMA / MA; (11) potassium methacrylate/2-HEMA compounded with (1),(5)-(11)glycerol; (2) ethyleneglycol; (3) D-saccharose, polyvinylalcohol, starch or mannitol; (4) polyvinylalcohol/ ethyleneglycol mixture. The compositions, which have antistatic properties, may be used for coating, finishing textiles &c.
