Abstract
1466358 Regulating and measuring viscosity ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 25 April 1974 [4 May 1973] 18124/74 Heading G1S Fuel whose viscosity is to be regulated is supplied by pipe 1 and forced by a constant volume pump 6 through capillary tubes 8 and 20, the pressure drop across the tube 8 being related to the viscosity of the fuel and measured by means 13, connected by pipes 11, 12 to the tube, which converts it into a signal adapted to control a pneumatic control station 18. The station 18 compares the incoming signal with a standard signal and after amplification uses it to adjust a valve 16 controlling steam supply to a steam heater 2, the heat adjusting the viscosity of the fuel. The tube 20 and the bellows in the transmitter 13 damp out pulsations so that viscosity control is not affected by pressure variations in the fuel system. In Fig. 2 the capillary tubes are formed by grooves in the outer surface of a cylindrical block 30, the tube 8 being a groove 33 extending from a fuel inlet port 32 around the block to an end 34 communicating with a bore 35, and the tube 20 being a groove 37 extending helically from the bore 35 to an exit end 38 which is in communication with the inside of the fuel line. In another embodiment the capillary grooves are spirally formed on a flat plate, Fig. 3 (not shown) adapted to be covered by another flat plate, Fig. 4 (not shown) which may be rotatably movable thereon to shorten or lengthen the first capillary groove according to position.
