Abstract

1466385 Gas turbine ducted fan engines – containment shield ROLLS ROYCE (1971) Ltd 21 Nov 1974 [10 Nov 1973] 52272/73 Headings F1J and F1T A containment device for a gas turbine engine comprises a cylindrical containment shield, a surrounding casing and support means connecting the shield to the casing, the shield being of greater rigidity than the support means or the casing such that in the event that the containment shield is impacted on by an engine part such as a blade, the shield will be displaced so transmitting some of the force of the impact to the casing. In the embodiment, the containment shield 17 is disposed around the fan blade assembly 14 of a gas turbine ducted fan engine, the containment shield being located within the fan casing which comprises an outer wall 15 and an inner wall 16, the shield being supported from the.outer wall 15 by four radiallyextending struts 18. The outer wall 15 is of thinner section than the inner wall 16. In the event of detachment of a fan blade 14 the containment shield will be displaced laterally, the impact being absorbed by the outer wall 15 and by the struts 18.
