Abstract
1466401 Cartridges; flexible belts TRW Inc 11 March 1974 [14 May 1973] 10771/74 Headings F3A and F3C A propellant cartridge for a gas powered, open chamber, nail-driving tool, comprises: a jacket 96 of non-circular cross-section; a propellant chamber 94 extending longitudinally through and opening through the ends of the jacket; and a propellant 104 within the chamber. A percussive primer composition 102 is located in a recess 100 of the jacket and is seated upon a bead 98. For electrically fired cartridges, the primer and bead are omitted and the propellant is directly ignitable by a spark or by a heated filament in the tool. Combustible seals may enclose the open ends of the propellant chamber. A plurality of the cartridges may be attached to a belt which has flaps along its longitudinal edge that are folded against and secured to the ends of the jacket to form the combustible end seals. The cartridges are made by extruding a long tube; slicing the tube into individual lengths, before or after inserting a moist propellant charge; packaging the cartridges so produced in a magazine; and allowing the propellant to dry whilst the cartridges are contained in the magazine. The magazine (86), Fig. 5, not shown, has an opening (106) to permit escape of moisture from the propellant. The opening is sealed with tape (108) once the propellant has dried.
