Abstract

1466425 Controlling light PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 March 1974 [29 March 1973] 13430/74 Heading G2F In a system where an optical image is formed by focusing a laser beam on a diffusing element S, e.g. a ground glass screen, and subsequently re-imaged by an objective 02 on a viewing screen P, granulation at P is reduced by placing at least one ultrasonically energized variable refractor T at some point on the optical path. As particularly described the image is produced by deflection at D of a beam from a laser G, but it may be derived from a hologram. In Fig. 2 the refractor T is a solid or liquid medium energized with ultrasonic waves of length approximately equal to the diameter of the granulation “grains” at that point, the resulting refractive index variations deviating components of the incident beam and giving an amplitude and phase re-distribution at the focal spot F. The rapidly charging granulation patterns at F are averaged by the eye. The larger the granulation grains, the more acoustic modulation is required, leading to an enlarged focal spot F, but for the same parameters, elimination of granulation is increased by increasing the aperture of objective O 2 . Elimination of granulation is better if an acoustic wave is used which is aperiodic over the short term, with a coherence length corresponding to that of the optical wave, e.g. by using further acoustic frequencies in element T or a subsequent cell with the same or a different medium. A second ultrasonic wave may propagate at 90 degrees to the first, to give granulation reduction with the same defocusing effect as for a single wave. As shown T is near O 2 but it may also be close to S or P with appropriate diminution of the acoustic wavelength. In a second embodiment; Fig. 3 (not shown), the element T is replaced by a prism, the position or shape of which is charged by ultrasonic waves so as to move the focal spot F over a distance greater than the diversion of a granulation point. The resulting rapidly charging granulation pattern is time averaged by the eye. The prism may be constituted by a quartz plate at acoustic resonance, so that there is a maximum variation in plate thickness at the centre of the plate. One half of the plate only is used as a prism of varying apex angle for the beam deflection. As particularly described, a pair of such plates acting at 90 degrees to each other are disposed between 02 and P and a further plate is disposed before S (M) to move the focus thereat. The pair of plates vibrate synchronously and with such an amplitude that the focus F is rendered stationary.
