Abstract

1467363 Change speed control DAIMLER BENZ AG 15 July 1974 [20 July 1973] 31285/74 Heading F2D A valve for varying hydraulic pressure applied to friction clutches and brakes in an automatic transmission on a motor vehicle in accordance with the valuable excitation of a solenoid 1, controlled by e.g. engine torque as manifested by engine intake depression or fuel control rod stroke, comprises an iron casing 4, 5, 6, enclosing the solenoid winding 1 and terminating in two concentric cylindrical pole pieces 7, 8 forming an annular gap into which is variably drawn an armature 21, preferably formed as a ring of segments, attached to a support 12 which is of a material, e.g. aluminium, the same as, or having the same thermal expansion coefficient as, that of a housing 9 accommodating the solenoid and its iron casing. The armature segments 21 are attached to the support 12 by rivets 20 integral with the latter. The armature support 12 is integral with a stem 11 supported for axial movement at both ends by resilient diaphragms 14 which may have expansion slots and may seal the magnetic section from the valve section, and may carry paper filter discs. The valve section comprises a seat 19 screwed in a flanged support 22 secured in the housing, the seat co-operating with a closure member 18 attached to the armature support 12, to control a valve gap for variably exhausting liquid supplied through the bore of the support 22 to a concentric surrounding exhaust outlet shown by the arrows. The armature and closure member 18 are loaded downwardly to close the valve gap by an adjustable spring 17, the gap being variably opened in accordance with the energization of the solenoid. To protect the lower diaphragm 14 from the dynamic force of liquid passing through the valve gap, the closure member, which is prismatic in section, passes with slight clearance through a fixed partition 25. The solenoid space between the two diaphragms 14 is filled with a liquid of low viscosity and thermal expansion coefficient, and the two spaces lying above and below that space communicate through a bore 13 in the armature support stem 11. In Fig. 2, not shown, the solenoid valve is screwed from the outside into a threaded bore in the transmission casing, and regulates pressure in a loading chamber of a regulator valve 34 inside the casing, communication with the chamber being through a hollow extension plug on the regulator valve body slidably and sealing- ly entering the bore of the solenoid valve in place of the magnetized insert 26 which latter is now installed in the inlet to the regulator valve. An additional loading spring (38) of the latter sets a minimum pressure sufficient for engine braking.
