Abstract

1467409 External shoe drum brakes; transmitting mechanism T OHI 4 June 1974 [12 Dec 1973] 24802/74 Heading F2E Brake shoes 6, Fig. 1, engage a drum 2 preferably secured to the end of a paper roll 1, Fig. 2, when pressurized fluid is admitted to a bellows 13 acting between a plate 11 fixed to a clamping link 10 and a plate 12 secured to a body 8 in a slider 7 located between two lateral members forming a brake lever 3 (see Fig. 2); the other end of link 10 is secured by nuts 16 to a second body 8 in a second slider 7 in a second brake lever 3. Each lever is pivoted at 5 to a fixed carrier 4. The vertical position of link 10, and hence the mechanical advantage of the system, is varied by rotation from a hand-wheel 22, through gearing, of pin wheels 27, each of which engages a captive pin wheel nut 21 meshing with a feed screw 19 on which rests a slider 7. A return spring 18 engaged by a nut 17 is provided on link 10. In Figs. 3, 4, expansion of a bellows 51 causes an operating lever 44, forming part of the clamping linkage, to push a right-hand shoe 33 against a drum 29 by means of the fulcrum roller 55 of operating lever 44 and a brake lever 30, and to pull a left-hand shoe 33 against the drum by a clamping link 36. The mechanical advantage may be varied by rotating fulcrum roller 55 by means of a handle 57, Fig. 4, whereupon support rollers 56, meshing with roller 55 and contacting lever 44, roll along lever 44 taking a frame 53 (containing all the rollers) with them. Frame 53 may then be secured in position by handle 61, operating setting-screw 58. Clamping link 36 has a return spring and wear-adjusting nuts as before. In Fig. 5 (not shown), two banks of five paper rolls feed a cutter (not illustrated) and the tension in the collection of overlying paper strips in transit is measured; an electric signal derived from the measurement varies by means of a valve the pressure of fluid in each bellows through common piping, in proportion to any tension change during unreeling. The tension differences between papers from different rolls are compensated for by individual adjustments of mechanical advantage.
