Abstract

1467443 Tandem axle suspensions N F WATSON 14 May 1974 [22 March 1973] 13862/73 Heading B7D In a semi-trailer suspension bogie, each of a pair of leaf springs 5 is coupled to the semitrailer chassis 11 and to tandem axles 13 by means which allow articulating and fore and aft movement between the axles 13 and the springs 5 and between the springs 5 and the chassis 11, and radius arms 2 connected to the chassis to pivot in longitudinally extending vertical planes are connected to the axles 13 by resilient bushes 14 which permit limited torsional and articulating movement of the axles relative to the radius arms. The ends of each spring 5 rest on sets 4 welded to the axles 13 and are retained by pins 6, and the centre of the spring 5 rockably engages a crowned seat 10 in a hanger 9 on the chassis 11. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), there are three axles suspended at each end by two springs, the central axle being coupled to adjacent ends of both springs. In Fig. 5 the leaf springs are replaced by air springs 15 positioned vertically above the axles. Axle loads are equalized by a balance pipe 17 to which is connected a height control valve 18. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the air springs are replaced by hydraulic piston and cylinder assemblies which are connected to an accumulator including a spring loaded piston or an air bag.
