1476763 Cracking hydrocarbons UNION CARBIDE CORP 13 May 1974 21006/74 Heading C5E In a process for cracking hydrocarbon feedstocks comprising introducing a mixture of feedstocks and hot gas into a reactor in which cracking temperatures are maintained, quenching the effluent from the reactor and recovering the products of cracking, the reactor comprises: (I) a cylindrical chamber 10 having first and second end closures 4, 7, closure 7 having a central orifice 6; (II) at least one inlet feed chamber 3 open at both ends and passing through the cylindrical wall 8 of chamber 10, one end of the feed chamber 3 being disposed at the wall 8 in such a way that the feedstock passing therethrough flows tangentially to the inner surface of chamber 10; and (III) at least one tube 5 having one end connected to chamber 10 about the orifice 6 so as to be in open communication with chamber 10, the dimensions of the chambers 3, 10 and tube 5 being such that (a) chamber 10 has a length b to diameter a ratio of 0À01-1 : 1, (b) the ratio of the equivalent diameter of the orifice 6 to the equivalent diameter c of the tube 5 is from 1 : 1 to 0À1 : 1, (c) tube 5 has a length d to equivalent diameter c ratio of 5 : 1 to 200 : 1, and (d) the ratio of the volume of chamber 10 to the volume of tube 5 is from 0À01 : 1 to about 5 : 1. (Equivalent diameter is defined as In the example, naphtha is cracked using superheated steam as the hot gas to give a product comprising ethylene (35À4%), propylene (14À1%) and methane (11À6%).
